Why HBCUs Matter
Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) were established before 1964 with the primary mission of educating Black Americans. During an era when most institutions of higher learning were racially segregated, HBCUs became the cornerstone of the Black middle class.
- Cultural Legacy: They are centers of Black excellence, preserving history and fostering a unique sense of community and pride.
- Economic Impact: HBCUs generate billions in economic impact and are leading producers of Black professionals in STEM, law, and medicine.
- Leadership: These institutions have produced icons like Thurgood Marshall, Toni Morrison, and Vice President Kamala Harris.
